Fields of research
Motivation to enhance allergy treatment could hardly
be greater than it is today. On the one hand, more
and more people in industrialized Western countries
react with allergic symptoms to otherwise harmless
substances. Approximately 20% of the population
suffers from an allergy. On the other hand, we now
have the opportunity with various therapeutic
measures to counter dysergulation in the body's
defense functions. In addition, our concept of the
immune system has become increasingly precise in
recent years.
Allergopharma for 30 years
Allergopharma was founded in 1969 and has been
active in research and development since the 1970s.
From the very beginning, the company specialized in
so-called type-1 allergy, elicited by class E
immunoglobulin (IgE). Scientific commitment shown by
Allergopharma has played a key role in making it a
market leader in preparations for specific
immunotherapy (SIT) and for prophylactic products.
Allergopharma is the only German supplier which
manufactures its own allergen extracts.
Allergen extracts are highly complex molecular
mixtures - and the immune system is one of the most
complex systems in the human organism. A crucial
aspect of work at Allergopharma is to identify
pathogenic allergens among the vast biochemical
diversity of extracts, and to elucidate their
molecular nature. After all, specific diagnostic
techniques and effective therapy first demand
knowledge of the allergenic substances involved.
The response of the immune system is an increasingly
important focal point of research at Allergopharma:
how allergens can upset the finely balanced system
of defense, and how SIT can help to restore the
equilibrium. Such insights serve eventually to
enable development of more efficient medication with
low levels of side effects - with perhaps some day
customized active substances. |
The vast numbers of potential allergens continuously
provide new substances to which growing numbers of
men and women react hyper sensitively. It is
essential that extracts for diagnosis and therapy
are made available as quickly as possible. An
additional focal point of our diagnostic research is
to make the detection of hypersensitivity more
simple and reliable. Medication as complex as an
allergen extracts places enormous demands on quality
assurance. Our research personnel are therefore
actively engaged in the development of innovative
and precise monitoring methods.
In the final analysis, the decisive question is:
does the patient profit from the therapy? Extensive
clinical tests provide answers. Such studies are
also valuable in verifying the recent hypothesis on
the therapeutic mechanisms involved in SIT on the
cellular level. In addition to hyposensitisation,
allergen avoidance - insofar as possible - is a
basic pillar in support of allergy therapy.
Since the early 1990s Allergopharma has also engaged
in house dust mite prevention measures thus offering
allergology specialist an overall concept of their
therapy. In these as well as other of its fields of
research, Allergopharma follows the principle -
rationalized and hence optimized treatment can only
result from a solid scientific foundation.
Everything from one source
In the course of more than 30 years of its corporate
history, Allergopharma has systematically
specialized in the diagnosis and therapy of type-1
allergy. Allergopharma is extremely proud of the
fact it is the only company in Germany that is able
to unite all the following efforts under one roof:
in-vitro and in-vivo diagnostics, specific
immunotherapy, and allergy prophylaxis - from basic
research through to the marketable product. We are
proud to be among the market leaders in all of these
areas. The essential benefit for you is that
Allergopharma is available to act as your highly
competent partner for all questions and matters
involving immediate-type allergies. |
